Mao Zedong was a socialist revolutionary, Marxist theorist and political leader. Born on 26th December 1893. Died 9th September 1976. He was born into a farming family in Shau Shangchung Village, Shang Tan District, Hunan Province, China.

Mao Zedong's father's name was Mao Zhen Sheng (Shun Sen). Although Shun Sheng was a poor farmer, he improved his situation by serving in the army for a few years and buying land. By trading in raw materials, he became a middle-class householder. Mao's two other brothers were He Sen and He Tan. The mother was a daughter of the Ben family of Tong Shiato Village, Xiang Xiang District. He was kind. He was very devoted to Buddhism. Mao started working on the farm when he was only seven years old.

In 1901, at the age of eight, Mao was admitted to the village school. He studied in that school till he was thirteen years old. Mao's village education ended in 1906. Then his father decided to enroll him in the army. An eleven-twelve-year-old girl was married to Mao before him. Mao Tse-tung later wrote - 'It was a purely nominal marriage. I never lived with her and never considered her my wife.'

He was the ruler of China from the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 until his death in 1976. He was one of the founders of the Communist Party of China and was the party's first chairman from 1943 to 1976.

His theoretical contributions to Marxism-Leninism, military tactics and his principles of communism are now collectively known as Maoism. He is often called the 'father of the nation' of the People's Republic of China.
