Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes About Doubt

“Doubt in my tradition is something that is very helpful. Because of doubt, you can thirst more and you will get a higher kind of proof.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh

Source and context of the quote :

Thich Nhat Hanh. A Vietnamese Thien Buddhist monk. He is also known today as a prominent peace activist, writer, poet and teacher. At the same time he is the founder of a school named ' Plum Village Tradition '. It should be noted that this institution is named after the ' Plum Village Monastery' in France and its founder is himself.

It was he who founded this institution (Plum Village Tradition) as the first monastic practice center while in exile. Here the practice of Buddhism was followed primarily from the perspective of the Mahayana sect , and later historically recognized as the main inspiration for ‘Engaged Buddhism’

He is also known as the ‘Father of Mindfulness’. His profound influence on the Western practice of Buddhism can be seen.

In the mid-1960s, he co- founded ‘The School of Youth For Social Services’ and created ‘the Order of Interbing’ . He was exiled from South Vietnam in 1966 for his opposition to the war. In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

He traveled internationally and advocated non-violent conflict resolution through negotiation. Through this campaign he sought to raise awareness of the interconnectedness of the environment that sustains and promotes peace. He first coined the term ‘Engaged Buddhism’ in his book ‘Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire’.

Thich Nhat Hanh is the author of over 100 books including ‘Anger’, 'The Miracle of Mindfulness' and ‘Living Buddha, Living Christ’. In his latest book, No Death, No Fear , he invites both Buddhists and non-Buddhists to look deeply into the nature of life and death.

He was asked in an interview included in this book,

Do you ever have doubts about these truths? How do you deal with your own doubts?

Thich Nhat Hanh made the quote in response to this question. The answer was like this :

Doubt in my tradition is something that is very helpful. Because of doubt you can thirst more and you will get a higher kind of proof.

Our life is a manifestation, and we can very well make that manifestation beautiful and meaningful and have a good influence on other manifestations in the now and in the future. If we know how to create the energy of love, understanding, compassion, and beauty, then we can contribute a lot to the world, influencing positively other manifestations. Because if the manifestations that happen in the present moment are beautiful and good, their continuation in the future will be also good and beautiful.

After 39 years in exile, he received permission to travel to Vietnam in 2005. In 2018, he officially returned to Vietnam. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 95.
