Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's views on the conversion of Hindus to Islam |
“There was no social unity at that time. The rulers were Aryans - the people were non-Aryans. For the common people, the Muslims were inferior, and the Aryans were inferior. In this situation, the possibility that the non-Aryans would oppose the Muslims for the sake of the Aryans is small. Rather, the egalitarian Islam is more respectable to them than the discriminatory mythological religion -- they are hated by the Aryans as an inferior race --- they will not hate the Muslims as an inferior race. That is why after the Muslim conquest, half of the non-Aryan Hindus converted to Islam.”
—Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay
