November 17, 2014. In an annual speech at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, Australia, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pressed Australia to release its greenhouse gas emissions targets. Here, she argued for stronger action to reduce carbon emissions. In the speech, Merkel said, “Climate change knows no borders. It will not stop before the Pacific islands and the whole of the international community here has to shoulder a responsibility to bring about a sustainable development.”

Merkel made the remarks as she spoke about the dire consequences of climate change and stressed the need to act.

In her wide-ranging speech at the Lowy Institute, Merkel raised the “terrible disease” of Ebola, the rise of China (‘peaceful and without any ruptures’), and the civil war in eastern Ukraine. Merkel linked the issues to the importance of European institutions.

The talks, held in Sydney, Australia, are aimed at strengthening trade and diplomatic ties between Australia and Germany. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the establishment of a joint working group. According to Mr Abbott, the joint working group will have a dual purpose. Namely, 1) the joint working group will help determine how the two countries can deepen their relationship and 2) how the pair can cooperate in the Indo-Pacific region. Abbott confirmed that the relationship between the two countries is very strong, but he wants the German-Australian relationship to bring better economic results.
